CARES is a small but mighty, locally operated nonprofit animal shelter based in Burien. We are independent and not part of King County or another regional shelter system.

We provide animal care and control services for Burien & Des Moines and sheltering services for Federal Way. We are proud to be a no-kill shelter and honored to receive annual recognition for that commitment from Best Friends Animal Society.

Each year, CARES serves more than 1,200 animals and maintains an approximately 65% return-to-owner rate. Animals who are not reunited with their families receive individualized care while awaiting an appropriate adoptive home.

C.A.R.E.S. is the Animal Care & Control authority for the city of Burien, Washington and sheltering services for Federal Way and Des Moines. Our primary concerns are public safety, the health and welfare of domestic animals, and enforcing the relevant laws and ordinances of Burien, Des Moines, Federal Way, King County, and Washington State.

C.A.R.E.S. was formed in 2011 by a group of local residents and business owners who wanted to reduce the dangers and nuisances caused by irresponsible pet ownership, and to protect pets from abuse, neglect and homelessness.
